Jesus: Wonderful Counsellor

We associate the word ‘counsellor’ to someone who listens and offers advice and guidance.

When Isaiah wrote 800 years before Jesus came that he would be called ‘Wonderful Counsellor’ it was a message of hope. ‘Wonderful’ meaning so good it is beyond our understanding and comprehension; and ‘Counsellor’ meaning a wise and trusted ruler.

‘For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.’

The Bible – Isaiah chapter 9 verse 6 (New International Version)

As a Wonderful Counsellor, Jesus has the power to not only speak into our situations but also to resolve them.

In John 4:28-30, we read that Jesus counselled a woman at the well.  His wisdom allowed her to face her past and in doing so she was able to acknowledge who Jesus was. He understood the loneliness of her broken life and enabled her to understand her true worth and significance. His wise counsel turned her life around.

Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did.  Could this be the Messiah?”  They came out of the town and made their way toward him.’

The Bible – John chapter 4 verse 28 – 30 (New International Version)

Counsellors can give us a plan to deal with our problems; but even the best counsellors can’t provide the strength to overcome them.  Jesus, the Wonderful Counsellor, can and will, if we allow and ask Him.

To take that transforming step requires us to trust in Jesus.  John 1:1-3 declares this truth – that Jesus is God Himself.  He knows everything from eternity past, to eternity future.

‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.’

The Bible – John chapter 1 verse 1 – 3 (New International Version)

No human has all the answers, but Jesus the Wonderful Counsellor does and he knows all about us.  Psalm 139 declares that Jesus created every fibre of our being.  He knows exactly what we are thinking and what we will do before we do it and we can trust that he watches over our every step.

Jesus is the Wonderful Counsellor.  He knows us completely, leads us perfectly and is with us forever.  We can trust in Him.
